USA Advances on Dempsey’s Strike

Former Revolution draft pick Clint Dempsey scored early to send the United States to the Copa America quarterfinals in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Paraguay at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Saturday.
Dempsey struck in the 27th minute after corralling a Gyasi Zardes cross inside the box and burying it to give the U.S. a lead it did not relinquish despite a slew of strong chances orchestrated by Paraguay in the waning stages.
U.S. defender DeAndre Yedlin was issued a pair of cautions in quick succession near the 50th minute, leaving his team shorthanded for the remaining 40 minutes.
Goalkeeper Brad Guzan made a pair of back-to-back saves in the 81st minute to preserve the win against a fierce Paraguay offense.
With the win, the U.S. will either face Peru or Brazil in the quarterfinals.
