A Sebastian Giovinco hat trick made it a night to forget for the mistake-prone Revolution, who dropped an embarrassing 4-1 loss to Toronto FC on Saturday at BMO Field.

The league’s reigning MVP scored in the 20th, 29th, and 76th minutes while Jozy Altidore tallied Toronto’s fourth goal in the 90+3 minute. Giovinco’s third goal came from the spot after Darrius Barnes – who earned his first minutes since suffering a season-ending knee injury last season – tripped Marky Delgado in the box to set up the penalty try.

Teal Bunbury’s 88th minute goal was the lone bright spot on an otherwise dark evening for the guests.

With the loss, the Revolution stay on 26 points for the second straight week and fall to 6-9-8. Saturday’s win allowed Toronto to improve to 36 points on a 10-7-6 mark.

New England will turn its attention to tournament play on Tuesday for a U.S. Open Cup semifinal tilt against the Chicago Fire at Gillette Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8:00pm.
