Its appears a local prospect has heeded Horace Greeley’s advice about going west.

Former University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth defender Karim Fernandes trialed with USL outfit LA Galaxy II last week in the hopes of landing a professional contract at the division 2 level.

Fernandes, who starred for the Corsairs from 2013-2015, linked up with Los Dos at the StubHub Center last week for three days of training along with a host of other young hopefuls. The New Bedford, Mass. native spent the 2016 season as a member of longtime New England amateur powerhouse Taunton Eagles.

“We want to find young talent who can enter our organization through Galaxy II, then work their way up to the first team,” said LA Galaxy II Head Coach Curt Onalfo said in a team release. “Scouting for Galaxy II gives us a chance to evaluate many different players: hidden gems that may not have agents, players without a fair chance in the past, first time pros, or young pros who are not under contract.”

While on the west coast, Fernandes documented his opportunity on social media.

“We want to make sure,” said Onalfo, “that everyone has a fair opportunity to be evaluated for a chance to earn a professional contract on our 2017 LA Galaxy II roster.”
