USASA: Wanderers Fall to Bhoys in Fricker Cup Tilt

MALDEN, Mass. – Bay State Soccer League side Kendall Wanderers FC put up a valiant effort in Sunday’s USASA Werner Fricker U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal, but Lansdowne Bhoys FC (N.Y.) were too strong as they clinched a 3-0 win at Pine Banks Park.
Ovan Oakley opened the scoring by converting a Lukas Zargas in the 20th minute to give the Bhoys the lead going into the half. The guests pulled away in the second half Sikele Sylvester met a cross from Ibrahim Diaby at the far post to put Wanderers in deeper ditch. Glen Reid capped the scoring in the 85th minute when he collected a Marcos Nunez pass and blasted it through.
Following Oakley’s goal, Wanderers best chance at an equalizer came in the 29th minute when Francis Mulkern uncorked a shot from the left flank that buzzed over the bar.
Down, but far from out, the hosts earned another quality chance in the 56th minute when Brama Samati hit a free kick near the edge of the box that forced a diving save from Abdoukarim Danso.
Not long after Samiti’s chance, Sylvester tallied after Diaby worked his way around a pair of Kendall defenders to set up the chance from point blank range. Kendall’s comeback hopes were effectively dashed in the 85th minute when Reid stepped up and launched a ball that bulged the back of the net.
With the win, Lansdowne Bhoys, who beat BSSL side Southie FC in National Amateur Cup play earlier this month, advance to the Fricker Cup semifinal on May 14 against FC Motown (N.J.).
Wanderers resume league play on Saturday against Southie FC.
