Kate Howarth’s hat trick helped propel the New England Mutiny to a 4-0 rout of the New York Magic on Sunday at East Longmeadow High School in East Longmeadow, Mass.
Howarth opened the scoring inside of three minutes before tallying again in the 20th minute. She completed the hat trick in the 56th minute, a goal that came after Brittany Champagne collected her first goal of the season in the 23rd minute.
With the win, which came only a day after the East Longmeadow selection suffered a 1-0 loss down in New Jersey, the Mutiny improve to 6-3-0 (18 points), keeping them in the playoff hunt for one of two playoff berths in the East Conference.
Howarth’s heroics also put her atop the team’s all-time scoring chart (42 goals, 13 assists, 97 points), and her 10 goals in 2017 is now tied for tops in all of UWS. The previous Mutiny scoring mark belonged to Mary-Frances Monroe (36 goals, 21 assists, 93 points).
The Mutiny will attempt to punch their playoff ticket in their regular season finale against the Western New York Flash in East Longmeadow on Sunday, Jul. 9. Kickoff is 3:00pm. New England will need maximum points plus favorable conference results to earn a postseason berth.
