Elm City Express claimed the Northeast Regional title after beating Clarkstown SC Eagles (N.J.) 3-1 in Saturday’s regional final at Yale University’s Reese Stadium in New Haven, Ct.
The Connecticut selection opened the scoring in the 19th minute on a Shaquille Saunchez goal that was set up by a Cris Hernandez cross. Hernandez turned into the role of goalscorer in the 45+1 minute when he curled a free kick from 20 yards that cleared the ball before it fell into the back of the net.
The Eagles returned in fire during the second frame after Emerson Lawrence converted his penalty try in the 69th minute. But Elm City calmed the nerves of their supporters in stoppage time when Tavon Morgan tapped through an Ibrahima Keita pass on a breakaway.
With the win, the Express will compete in the NPSL semifinals on Saturday, Aug. 5 at Reese Stadium against Midland-Odessa FC.
