An Omar Gonzalez own goal set the stage for a massively disappointing night for the United States, who failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup following Wednesday’s 2-1 loss at Trinidad & Tobago.

Gonzalez’s wayward clearance found the back of the net in the 17th minute before a 37th minute Alvin Jones blast made it a two-goal deficit going into halftime. Christian Pulisic brought one back in the 47th minute, but missed opportunities was all the U.S. garnered for the rest of the evening.

The loss, combined with a 3-2 Honduras win over Mexico as well as a 2-1 Panama win over Costa Rica, all conspired to close the door on the U.S., who will not compete in the World Cup for the first time since 1986.

Ironically, Trinidad & Tobago was the foe the U.S. beat in qualifying 28 years ago to clinch the first of seven straight World Cup tournaments after a 40-year dry spell.
