The Western Mass Pioneers and MPS Portland Phoenix kicked of the weekend that was in New England soccer with a 0-0 draw on Friday at Lusitano Field in Ludlow, MA. Goalkeepers Matt Williams (MPS) and Colin O’Donnell (WMP) stopped a combined 19 shots to keep the board unblemished.
On Saturday, the New Hampshire Phantoms and Vermont Voltage followed suit with a 0-0 draw of their own in Saint Albans, VT. Jon Dawson (NH) and Ryan Brooks-Newton (Vermont) kept their respective nets tidy to clinch a point for their respective sides.
Up in New Hampshire, the Boston Aztec came away with a dramatic 1-0 win over the New York Athletic Club in the quarterfinals of the WPSL Eastern Playoffs. Megan Mischler scored the game-winner in the second overtime to deliver the Aztec to the Eastern semis against the New York Fury on a date and time to be determined.
On Sunday, the Pioneers and Phoenix renewed their acquaintances with a match in Portland. This time, each side scored, but the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Chris Roswess’ 14th minute strike gave the guests an early lead, but Charlie Rugg equalized in the 81st minute to rescue his squad from the loss column and keep his club’s four point cushion atop the standings intact.
