Breakers Blanked by Philly

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –  Veronica Boquete’s 83rd minute strike snapped a scoreless tie and delivered the Independence to a 1-0 win over the Breakers at Harvard Stadium on Wednesday night.

Boquete’s goal was her fourth of the season while keeper Nicole Barnhart, who stopped all three shots she faced, picked up her second clean sheet of the season. Breakers keeper Alyssa Naeher made five saves on the night, but it wasn’t enough to keep her club from the loss column.

With the loss, the Breakers fall to 4-6-4 (16 pts.) and lose valuable ground in the WPS playoff hunt. Phildelphia’s win ups their record to 9-3-3 (30 pts.) and puts them three points clear of Western New York for the first spot in the standings.

The Breakers will hit the road for a crucial match against on magicJack (5-6-2, 16 pts.) on Saturday. Both teams are currently tied for fourth place in the standings, and a win would propel either team toward the security of third place.
