Deadline Day Dempsey Deal?

Former New England Revolution star Clint Dempsey could be changing teams before England’s January transfer window comes to a close at 6PM ET on Tuesday. The current Fulham FC midfielder has been lighting it up in the Barclays Premier League with 15 goals through all competitions and could see a dream move to one of the top clubs in the league before Tuesday’s deadline.

Dempsey has made it clear he hopes to play for a club in the UEFA Champions League before his career comes to an end and could soon get his wish.

“You should never get content,” Dempsey told the Times. “I want to play in the Champions League. Nobody thought I would get this far. I want to go as far as I can.”

Dempsey was linked to a move with perennial Champions League spot contenders Arsenal during the summer and could still find himself a target of the team, according to The Metro. The U.S. International has also been widely linked to Queens Park Rangers, though if the 28-year-old Texan is looking to play in Europe’s top competition that would likely be a step in the wrong direction.

ESPN broadcaster Ian Darke has other ideas, suggesting Dempsey could help championship contenders Manchester United. Dempsey hasn’t been linked to the club, but as Darke points out such a move wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility.

Goal.com has also mentioned Dempsey as a potential fit at Liverpool. The Fenway Sports Group owned club could use a boost to their attack at a reasonable price and Dempsey would fit the bill.

Among other top English clubs, Dempsey would seem a fit at Chelsea FC where an overpriced and underperforming Fernando Torres isn’t getting the job done. The team needs goals to lock down their fourth place position and Dempsey could provide them.

Should Dempsey join any of those clubs he’ll instantly get his chance to compete for a spot in the Champions League and with so many top teams clearly in need of a creative attacker, Tuesday could prove a very exciting day for Dempsey and his fans.

Of course the Furman University product may still find himself in a Fulham uniform on Wednesday, but his name should certainly be on the list for any top club looking to boost their attack in the January window. Should Fulham hold on to the two time MLS Best XI player who helped lead the Revolution to two MLS Cup finals, they’ll have a hard time keeping him past this summer if he keeps up his torrid run of form.
