Revs defeat BC

The New England Revolution continued their preseason schedule on Friday afternoon with 3-0 scrimmage victory over Boston College at Gillette Stadium. Rookie Kelyn Rowe led the Revs with two goals in the win.

The Revs started the match with most of their veterans on the pitch. Matt Reis started in goal with Chris Tierney, A.J. Soares, John Lozano and Darrius Barnes in front of him in defense. Rowe played on the left side of midfield with Benny Feilhaber and Shalrie Joseph in the middle and Sainey Nyassi on the right. Unsigned MLS Supplemental Draft pick Dawyne “Rick” Smith started up top with Fernando Cardenas.

Rowe opened the scoring in the 7th minute when Benny Feilhaber played him behind the Eagles’ right back with a through ball. Rowe dribbled into the box and slotted a shot past BC keeper Justin Luthy just inside the far post to give the home team the 1-0 lead.

Nyassi suffered an injury early in the half and was replaced by Alec Purdie, an unsigned Supplemental Draft pick in the 29th minute. The team would make three more subs at halftime with trialist Blake Wagner replacing Tierney at left back, Bobby Shuttleworth entering for Reis in net and Zack Schilawski taking over for Smith up top.

Purdie would make his mark nine minutes into the second half. The rookie got the ball on the right wing from Cardenas and sent a centering pass to Rowe. Rowe one-timed a shot from the top of the penalty area that curled just inside the post to put the Revs up by two.

The Revs would take out the remainder of their starting line-up in the 71st minute. Stephen McCarthy, Ryan Kinne, Tyler Polak, Kenny Mansally, Clyde Simms, Michael Roach, Zak Boggs and trialist Gabe Mercier all entered for the Revs.

Roach finished off the scoring in the 89th minute. The unsigned rookie got the ball at the top of the box and after taking a touch attempted a quick shot that saved by Eagles’ back-up keeper Keady Segel. Roach continued the play, however, collecting his own rebound and slotting it into the empty net to give the Revs the 3-0 victory.

Right back Kevin Alston missed the match for the Revolution after undergoing a minor procedure on his wrist on Thursday. Right midfielder Ryan Guy was also out with a calf injury suffered in Arizona and forward Diego Fagundez missed out with an illness.

Notably absent from the Revs lineup were trialists Luke Kreamalmeyer, Patrick Otte, and Brandin McClay.
