PDL: Azul Fall to Fury North of Border
- Updated: May 31, 2013
CFC Azul (1-1-1, 4 points) dropped its first game of the season in a 3-0 loss to the Ottawa Fury (2-0-0, 6 points) on Friday at Algonquin College Soccer Complex.
Fury forward Yannis Becker tallied twice (25′, 69′) while Carl Haworth capped the scoring late (74′). Nils Carlson stopped every shot he faced to earne his first clean sheet of the season.
Azul forward Justin Brewer earned a 76th minute red card to leave the Azul shorthanded for the duration.
After the Fury fell short in their first handful of chances, Becker opened the scoring just after the midway point of the first frame when he pounded through a close range shot past keeper Drew Esposito.
Becker struck again in the 69th minute when Jacob Barron cut it back to him near the top of the box, where the Fury forward fired it through.
Carlson collected the final Fury goal in the 74th minute when he ripped a free kick over the wall and above the reach of Esposito.
Brewer was issued a red card two minutes later after vehemently protesting the referee’s refusal to issue a penalty to Azul.
The Fury’s win pushed them to the top of the Northeast Conference, and upped their all-time home mark at Algonquin College Soccer Complex to 31-2-9.
The Azul return to action on Saturday at 7pm when the Vermont Voltage host them at Collins Perley Sports Complex in Burlington, Vt. The Fury host the Western Mass Pioneers on Saturday at 7pm.
