PDL: Phoenix’s Playoff Dreams Ended by NYRB 23s
- Updated: July 27, 2015
Northeast Division winners GPS Portland Phoenix saw their postseason dreams come to a crashing halt after they suffered a 4-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls U-23s in Saturday’s Eastern Conference Semifinal at NJIT in Newark, N.J.
Joe Swenson scored the opening goal in the 45+1 minute to send the Red Bulls into halftime with the advantage. Things went from bad to worse for the Phoenix in the second half as Zach Knudson (52nd minute), Chris Lema (63d minute) and Joe Farrell (66th minute) put the match out of reach for the Maine-based outfit.
The Phoenix finished the 2015 campaign with a 9-2-5 record, and will likely earn a spot in next year’s U.S. Open Cup tournament.
The Red Bulls subsequently beat Jersey Express 2-1 in Sunday’s Eastern Conference Final, and will take on the Ocala Stampede on Friday in the PDL semifinals.
