Safira FC Joins Major League Futsal
- Updated: February 23, 2016
Commonwealth futsal power Safira FC will be taking its exploits to the national level this year after they joined the 32-team Major League Futsal (MLF) on Monday.
Safira will join MLF, which was founded in December 2015, ahead of its inaugural season. The club will compete in the league’s Eastern Region, which includes Toronto United, Sporting Maryland, BNC Revolution, and Northern Virginia NPC.
The news of the club’s intentions to join a national outfit comes less than two weeks after it claimed a record seventh-straight regional title at the 2016 U.S. Futsal Northeast Regional Championship.
Prior to Monday’s announcement, Safira, which has claimed three national championships since 2009, had been previously limited to playing in local and regional tournaments. Safira striker Alencar Junior told NESoccerToday.com in December that he hoped a proper national futsal league would be formed before long.
“I think (futsal) is growing, and it’s going to grow more,” Junior said. “And hopefully we’ll have a league, and hopefully, I won’t have to wait until I’m in my 40s or something, so hopefully sooner than that.”
MLF has not yet released its regular season schedule, though it originally had plans to start in March. The league is comprised of four conferences, and boasts clubs in Mexico in addition to the U.S. and Canada.
