E.P. Scores 5 Before Benfica WP Quits

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After watching Kyle Teixeira score four first half goals, Benfica Washington Park finally figured out a way to stop the skipper from finding the back of the net on Sunday.
They waved the white flag at the interval.
In a match that was cut short when the frazzled guests forfeited at halftime, East Providence (11-3-2, 36 points) dominated for 45 minutes to earn a loud 5-0 win over Benfica WP (1-2-10, 5 points) at Riverside Rec Park.
Teixeira opened the scoring in the 17th minute, then went on to score in the 23rd, 27th, and 31st minutes while Armando Gomes scribbled his name on the scoresheet in the 25th minute. Jimmi Underhill was rarely tested, but made a vital save in the 16th minute to keep the sheet clean.
Benfica WP showed some early signs of life in the second minute of play when Silvandro Andrade crossed it into the area to Josue Botelho. But the chance evaporated when Botelho’s shot strayed wide of the far post.
Fifteen minutes of adjustments and acclimation followed the guests’ early foray. But once East Providence fully settled in, there was nothing Benfica WP could do to stop them.
In the 17th minute, Alonso Villasenor pressed the back four before putting it in front to Teixeira, who ran onto it, then tapped it through to begin the onslaught.
A minute later, Teixeira nearly scored his second goal when Gomes played it through to the skipper, who’s shot hit the bar before it floated over the end line.
But there was nothing the woodwork could do in the 23rd minute. After Teixeira stole a lazy back pass inside the Benfica WP’s defending third, the striker went into the area full steam before he ripped it past a helpless Burno Flor.
Two minutes later, Teixeira assumed the role of engineer when he went wide, then crossed it into the area for Gomes. After getting stopped by Flor on the first effort, Gomes sent through the subsequent rebound to make it a three-goal affair.
Gomes returned the favor in the 27th minute when he settled a pass from Kyle Lopes, then fed it to Teixeira before he sent it through to get the hat trick.
As if Teixeira needed another excuse to score, Benfica WP granted the captain another golden ticket in the 31st minute. With East Providence pressing inside the area, the guests were called for a handball and a penalty was awarded. As expected, Teixeira stepped up and buried it to cap the scoring.
Shortly after the halftime whistle, the referees conferred with the coaches, and Benfica WP players shed their jerseys and collected their belongings, as the decision was made to call it quits.
East Providence returns to action at 6:30pm on Aug. 11 at Lusitana Field in Cumberland, R.I. to play Lusitana Sports. Benfica WP returns to the pitch at 6:30pm on Aug. 11 when they host Lindo’s ST at Drummond Field in Providence, R.I.
