Parkhurst In CL Team of the Week
- Updated: October 27, 2012
Former New England Revolution defender and current starting right back at Danish club F.C. Nordsjælland, Michael Parkhurst, was named to the UEFA Champions League Team of the Week for his performance in Nordsjælland’s 1-1 home draw with Juventus on Tuesday.
Nordsjælland, the defending champions of the Danish Superliga, were the underdogs against a heavily favored Juventus, the defending champions of Italian Serie A, but took a 51st minute lead through Mikkel Beckmann and held on for a 1-1 draw after Mirko Vucinic’s 81st minute equalizer. The draw was Nordsjælland’s first point of the Champions League and left the club in last place of Group E with 1 point.
Juventus maintained 57% of the possession and outshot Nordsjælland 33 to 10, but the defense did enough to hold on for the tie. Parkhurst, a Rhode Island native, came up big in the match blocking two shots after Nordsjælland took their surprise lead early in the second half.
Nordsjælland previously lost 4-0 to defending Champions League winners Chelsea and 2-0 to defending Ukrainian champions FC Shakhtar Donetsk. Nordsjælland sits three points behind Chelsea for the second spot in the group — needed to advance to the next round — with three games remaining.
Nordsjælland returns to Champions League action on November 7th for a rematch — this time on the road — against Juventus.
Nordsjælland (7-4-3, 25 points) currently holds third place in the Danish Superliga, four points behind first place FC Copenhagen.
