The fierce winter weather that dumped record snowfalls and brought blustery conditions across the region has impacted at least one local side’s springtime plans.

On Saturday, Western Mass Pro Soccer announced that its Apr. 4 season-opening spring contest against the Philadelphia Fury for has been moved to Jun. 13 due as Lusitano Stadium undergoes repairs following the harsh winter.

“After serious deliberations, we felt it was necessary to move our home opener April 4th,” Western Mass Pro Soccer Director of Operations Steve Scott said in a club release. “A lot of the snow has melted from Lusitano Stadium, but eliminating all the snow and ice on the field would be unlikely for Apr. 4. Because of the snow, we are unable to access areas to replace flood lights and other necessary maintenance.”

The club’s first home game will now be played on Apr. 25 against Ironbound Soul.

In addition to the state of the pitch, as well as the lighting, Scott said that the Stadium scoreboard and some of the signage that surrounds the pitch was damaged.

With their Apr. 4 date against the Fury postponed, the Lusitanos will open the spring ASL schedule on the road on Apr. 11 against the Rhode Island Oceaneers.

Western Mass will kick off the spring season on the heels of an unbeaten 2014 fall campaign, which saw them go 6-0-4 (22 points).
