Kate Howarth was the hero again for the New England Mutiny after she struck from the spot late to lift her squad to a 1-0 win over Jersey Blues on Saturday at Northampton High School in Northampton, Mass.

Howarth, who scored twice in the Mutiny’s season-opening win two weeks ago, broke through the Blues’ backline in the 72nd minute eying the back of the net before she was taken down inside the box, earning the penalty try. Moments later, she sent it past keeper Eliza Gray to put the Mutiny on top. Kristyn Shea stopped everything she saw to collect her first clean sheet of the season.

With the win, the Mutiny have collected maximum points from their first two games, and find themselves atop the Power 5 standings with a 2-0-0 (6 points) record. The Blues fell to 0-1-3 (4 points).

Gray was kept busy by the Mutiny attack, and thanks to her efforts, the guests were able to march into halftime unscathed. But with Howarth keen to return to the scoresheet, there was little the Blues keeper was able to do in the 72nd minute.

After Howarth picked herself back up after the penalty call, Gray was rendered a bystander as the Mutiny striker’s subsequent shot from the spot gave the hosts the lead with time winding down.

Four minutes later, the Mutiny nearly added to their lead when Julia Weithofer sent a ball through to Megan Burke, who whose shot beat Gray before it smacked off the post in the 76th minute. Not long after, Charlie Branch watched her shot crash into the crossbar in the 83rd minute.

Howarth came close to collecting her second goal of the game in the 85th minute on a point-blank effort that Gray was quick to deny to prevent further damage.

The Mutiny return to action on Saturday when they hit the road for the first time in 2015 to face Buxmont Torch at Pennridge High School in Perkasie, Pa. Kickoff is set for 3:00pm.
