The New England Mutiny kicked off their two-game weekend road trip on a positive note, but were unable to keep their unbeaten record intact after it was all said and done.

On Saturday, striker Kate Howarth scored late to give the Mutiny a 2-1 win over Buxmont Torch at Pennridge High School in Perkasie, Pa.

Howarth tallied in the 87th minute after taking a pass from Tori Sousa and sending it through to break a 1-1 game. Moments before Howarth’s team-best fourth goal of season arrived, Jaime Bouffard had leveled the match from the spot in the 85th minute.

Rachel Ugolik opened the scoring in the 38th minute after she corralled a Kacey Richards cross and buried it.

“It was a professional win,” Mutiny owner/general manager Joe Ferrara told NESoccerToday.com on Sunday. “We approached it knowing the schedule makers had made it tough on us. So we had to manage minutes, and use our bench. When we went up 1-0, we tried to kill the game.”

The Mutiny tried to collect another set of three points on Sunday, but missed opportunities was the order of the day for Ferrara’s squad, which dropped a 1-0 loss to New York Athletic Club at Travers Island in Pelham, N.Y.

After knocking on the door all afternoon, the Mutiny had the rug pulled right under them after Boston College alumnus Vicki DiMartino set up Caroline Simpkins, who scored the lone goal of the match in the 58th minute.

“It was frustrating ,” Ferrara said. “We played our best game of the season, and we didn’t capitalize on our chances.”

With the win and the loss, the Mutiny record now stands at 3-1-0 (9 points), which keeps them atop the Power 5 table.

The Mutiny return to action on Saturday to face Lancaster Inferno at 4:00pm in the local side’s long-awaited return to a place they once called home during their early days – Central High School in Springfield, Mass.

The original incarnation of the Mutiny – the Springfield Sirens – played their home matches at Central High during the late-1990s and early-2000s.
