Isaque Couto’s second strike sent Wednesday’s quarterfinal match against the Philadelphia Union Under-16 squad to extra time, but the Revolution Under-16 squad was eliminated from the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Playoffs following a 5-3 loss at the PPL Park training facility in Chester, Pa.

Moments after the Union took the lead on a 75th minute goal from Raheem Taylor-Parkes, Couto, who also scored from the spot in the 33rd minute, filed a prompt response when he grabbed a ball from Andrew Barrowman outside the area, cut inside, and sent it through in the 76th minute. But the Union pressed ahead in extra time on two more goals from Taylor-Parkes.

The hosts opened the scoring inside of 12 minutes on a header from Jack Skahan, while the guests countered with strikes from Couto and Daniel Jones, who scored in the 20th minute. The Revolution went into halftime with the lead before Alex Soto put it at two-apiece in the 52nd minute.

With the win, the Union advanced to the Academy Championships in Carson, Calif. The Revolution finish their season with a 14-6-10 cumulative record.

Both sides made their intentions known early as Revolution goalkeeper Trey Miller was tested on a Josue Mongue shot in the first minute. Isaac Angking put the Union on notice moments later when he fired a dangerous shot that just cleared the bar.

But the Union didn’t have to wait much longer to find the back of the net. Matthew Real sent a long cross ahead to Skahan, who put it through in the 12th minute.

The Revolution came right back eight minutes later when Jennings dribbled it toward the Union backline before sending it through to Jones, who beat keeper Andrew Verdi to put the match on level terms in the 20th minute.

Aaron James attempted to put the Revolution ahead just after the hour when he broke through the Union backline with an eye toward goal. But he was cut down inside the box, and the guests were awarded a penalty kick. Seconds later, Couto coolly slotted it through in the 33rd minute to send the Revolution into halftime with the lead.

Miller did his best to repel a motivated Union attack early on the in the second half, but they were eventually able to break through in the 52nd minute on a powerful shot from Soto that smacked off the bottom of the bar and deflected off of Miller before settling into the back of the net.

While Calvin Aroh and Justin Rennicks both made bids to reclaim the lead, the Union capitalized five minutes from full time when Taylor-Parkes collected a cross and fired it past Miller in the 75th minute.

The Revolution responded immediately to the Taylor-Parkes strike when Barrowman found Couto at the edge of the box, where he proceeded to cut through and beat Verdi, sending the match into extra time with a 3-3 scoreline.

But in extra time, the Union pulled ahead after Taylor-Parkes beat the offside trap and deposited a well-taken shot into the Revolution net during the 89th minute.

The Union midfielder struck again in the 102nd minute after Miller came up for a last-gasp Revolution corner kick that was cleared up the field, where Taylor-Parkes collected it and dribbled at an open goal before tapping it through.
