A scoreless first half gave way to a compelling sequel as a short-handed Western Mass Pioneers dropped their first match of the season to GPS Portland Phoenix in a 2-1 defeat on Friday at Lusitano Stadium in Ludlow, Mass.

Pioneers striker Kyle Tomas was issued a 63rd minute red card that left the hosts shorthanded for the duration. The Phoenix capitalized in the waning stages on goals from Fletcher Ekern and Guilherme Da Silva Leme in 80th and 81st minutes.

Western Mass brought one back in the 90th minute on a Ryan Taylor tally, but that was the closest the hosts came to getting the result.

With the loss, the Pioneers fall to 1-1-2 (5 points) while the Phoenix pad their point total by improving to 2-0-0 (6 points).

The Pioneers will return to action on Jun. 3 when they face AC Connecticut in Danbury, Ct. The Phoenix will be pitted against Seacoast United Phantoms on Wednesday in Portsmouth, N.H.
